This brief tour introduces those with no experience to the fun of kayaking in either single or tandem sea kayaks. Our instructors will teach you how to land and launch your kayak properly, how to apply basic strokes to maneuver your kayak, and provide coaching as needed to paddle your kayak effectively. Our trip will meander along the shoreline of Elk Rock State Park to view the high sandstone cliffs and if time permits learn a little about the geology of the area, discover a few historical facts, and see a variety of wildlife.

Experience Level

None! No previous kayaking experience is required for this trip. It is a great tour for beginning and novice paddlers. Please be aware that participating in any kayak trip includes the possibility of tipping and getting wet.

What To Bring

All you need to bring along is your lunch, plenty to drink, and a change of dry clothes. We’ll provide everything else.

Itinerary

Everyone should meet at the restrooms at the top of the hill just inside the parking lot at the Elk Rock State Park Boat Ramp. The trip will start at the kayak launch halfway down the ramp and to the left. Plan on arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the trip.

Start by getting sized for a paddle, PFD, and a kayak.  Next, we’ll introduce you to some basic paddling concepts, discuss safety issues, and then get you on the water.

When everyone is comfortable the tour will move east to explore the shores and cliffs. Along the way, you’ll make stops at points of interest to view fossils, explore a cave, and learn about the geology of the lake. The last stop will incorporate a quick lunch and then the tour will continue back to the boat ramp.

Trip Includes:

Kayak, Personal Flotation Device (Lifejacket), paddle, instruction, and guidance along the route.

Price: $64.20 (includes all gear)

Directions Eco Tour: Meet at the 2nd Left inside Elk Rock State Park. There will be a pit toilet and parking lot overlooking the lake. Meet in this parking lot and we will carpool to put-in.
