Veterans Day r
Nov 11 all-day

Nov 11; Veterans Day.  On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined its allies–Britain, France, and Russia–to fight in the “Great War.” Under the command of Major General John J. Pershing, more than 2 million U.S. soldiers fought on battlefields in France. The war ended when Germany agreed to an armistice effective  November 11, 1918 (“11th hour of 11th day of 11th month”). This became known as “Armistice Day,” later “Veterans Day.”

Kayak Pool Session at Bender Pool in Cedar Rapids @ Bender Pool
Nov 18 @ 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

As a place to practice for the open water season, a pool is a good substitute to the harsh conditions involved with boating in the winter. It also works well to refine skills under a controlled environment rather than out on a river.

Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation and Linn County Conservation are again teaming up to promote kayaking with pool time at Bender Pool in Cedar Rapids, 940 14th Ave SE. The drop-in pool sessions for kayakers will begin from 4:30-6:30 pm on Sunday, Nov. 18.

The fee is $10 per person per time. Minimum age is 10 years and everyone will be required to be in swimwear and a lifejacket. A helmet is required for those practicing rolls. Youth must be supervised by an adult.

4:30-6:30 pm Sunday sessions have been scheduled for Nov 18, Jan 13 & 27, Feb 10 & 24, plus a special Intro to Kayak Clinic “Paddles In the Pool” event on Mar 24.  December dates were cancelled due to scheduled pool work.

For info about Bender Pool, call 319-286-5790. For further questions on the kayak/canoe sessions, call Wickiup Hill at (319) 892-6485.
