The Upper Midwest Stream Restoration Symposium (UMSRS) presents a unique opportunity to bring together regional stream restoration practitioners so they may share experiences and expertise with colleagues working within similar environmental and land-use conditions. Attendees from multi-disciplinary backgrounds will hear about innovative restoration designs and approaches as well as have the opportunity to network with the region’s leading stream restoration practitioners.

UMSRS looks to provide a collaborative environment which will allow an interdisciplinary approach to stream restoration and other related watershed sciences, hence a broad range of speakers and topics are actively encouraged:

  • Stream restoration design and alternative analyses
  • Restoration design implementation and response
  • Restoration project and design monitoring
  • Presentations geared toward the planning, regulatory, and funding context under which stream restoration occurs.

  • October 26, 2018- Oral Abstracts due, Early bird registrations open
  • December 28, 2018- Regular registration opens
  • February 8, 2019- Poster Abstract Deadline and Registration closes
  • February 24-27, 2019- PRRSUM @ Radisson Hotel in La Crosse, WI

“Kayak & SUP Clinic,” Bender Pool, Cedar Rapids @ Bender Pool

“Kayak & SUP Clinic,” Noon-3:00 pm in Cedar Rapids. (Times to be confirmed)

Learn & practice basics of kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in the warm & controlled environment of Bender Pool, 940 14th Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids. All equipment provided, you bring swimwear & wear it in pool. Experienced paddlers will share skills & enthusiasm with beginners and those wishing to improve abilities. Clinic will cover safety tips, types of boats/boards, paddling skill/techniques (sorry, no kayak roll instruction), entering/exiting water, where to go kayaking/paddleboarding.

Wacky Yakky Games: First Annual Yak and SOP Sports @ Quarry Springs Park
May 18 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Kayak and SOP races, obstacle course and GPS scavenger hunt using yaks and SOP’s. Relay races, speed races and slalom races for every skill level and age 12 and above. We will have prizes for the winners and some swag from the various water sport supporters. Pelican Kayaks will have a variety of yaks to demo with manufacturer representation as well as demos from Bonafide and Riot kayaks. Tracey from the Red Rock lake Army Corps of Engineers will have Water Safety information and representation. At the end of the day, we will draw a name from all of the participants to win a kayak. A water and snack bag will be handed out at registration and a food and beverage truck will be on site. Come make this event a great one. Hope to see you there. Registration information coming soon. Stand Up Paddleboard Clinic at Lake Sugema @ North Boat Ramp at Lake Sugema

Meet at the North Boat Ramp at Lake Sugema

Beat the heat and try something new this summer. You can reserve your hour session for some paddling as the day winds down. The session will open with directions from a certified instructor with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources then participants will be able to put their skills to the test on the water. Sessions will begin at 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm and are limited to 10 participants. Any participants under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult.
